Mufasa is like three fathers rolled into one. An old softie who loves spending time with his son, a fountain of quiet wisdom dedicated to teaching his son the delicate balance of all living things and a Southside savannah street brawler who will straight up pound seven shades of snot out of any hyena stupid enough to eyeball his boy.

And then Disney killed him.

For a lot of kids back in the early '90s the death of Mufasa in 1994 was probably the worst thing they had ever seen. Good storytelling transcends the fact that we're talking about anthropomorphic lions that live with a bird who sounds like Rowan Atkinson. Watching Simba tug on the ear of his dead dad before tucking himself under his limp and lifeless paw is rough. Like, Watership Down rough. It's worse than Goose dying in Top Gun.

Mufasa really is representative of the ultimate father, one who is willing not only to risk his own life but sacrifice it completely to save his own child. The fact that he's also a lion who sounds like Darth Vader is just a bonus.
